Automotive Alarm Installation
What will I be doing ?
There’s a growing need for services that select, install, test, repair and service alarm systems for automobiles. Car owners in big cities and small towns alike are buying car alarms, but frequently don’t know how to install them. That’s where you can help.
What will I need to start ?
To install car alarms you must first understand how automotive electrical systems work. You can pick up that knowledge in books available through larger bookstores as well as practicing on your own car(s). You may also be able to make copies of installation instructions for popular alarm systems. You will need some tools and equipment as well : screwdrivers, pliers, wire cutters and strippers, electrical voltameter and continuity tester. If you don’t already have them you can buy a basic set of tools and equipment for less than $100.
Who will my customers be ?
Your customers will be those who have purchased or plan to purchase an auto alarm system. You can work through a retailer who will recommend you for installation or you can sell complete auto alarm packages yourself-installed and tested. Watching the newspaper’s police report can tell you where potential customers are. Neighborhoods in which car theft is more prevalent are neighborhoods with prospective customers. A small advertisement in the automotive classified ads can help car buyers know about your services. You can also contract with auto alarm retailers to do their installation.
How much should I charge ?
The rate for automotive alarm installation is typically $25 to $60 an hour with set rates based on typical installations. For example, you may charge a percentage of the value of the alarm system. One installer charges $50 for installing systems retailing under $200, and $75 for installing units up to $500 in value. He works by the hour for systems costing more than $500.
How much will I make ?
An auto alarm installer can earn $500 or more in a day with overhead expenses of 20 to 30 percent. You can install the alarms in your garage, your driveway, at the car owner’s home or in a centrally located shop. The closer to home, the lower your overhead expenses will be. But a poor location may make attracting customers difficult. Remember that it’s smarter to increase expenses if they proportionately increase income.
How can I get started ?
Start by studying your competitors and how they work. If you have none, the market may be wide open. Then develop your knowledge and skills for installing auto alarms. Understand automotive electricity and how alarm system work. Gather your tools. Get some experience by working for your friends or as an employee of a car alarm installation service. One successful installer with four years of experience started his business by taking on jobs his employer didn’t want : installing alarms in big-rig trucks. He started a weekend business that soon became full-time.
The SIC code for automotive alarm installation services is 5531-07.
